Super Bowl 59 odds and analysis

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles will return to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years by virtue of their 55-23 thrashing of the Commanders in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

Jalen Hurts put any doubts about the health of both the air attack he helms and his left knee with a standout performance, throwing for 246 yards and a touchdown and adding three short “Tush Push” touchdowns on the ground. Saquon Barkley continued his own dominance with 118 rushing yards while adding three trips to the end zone in his own right.

By virtue of Kansas City’s 32-29 win over the Bills — Patrick Mahomes’ fourth win in as many tries against Josh Allen in the postseason — Philadelphia will now tangle with a Chiefs squad that edged them by a 38-35 score in Super Bowl LVII. In that game, Hurts notably put together a stellar effort that undoubtedly would have earned him the game’s MVP honors had Philadelphia prevailed, throwing for 304 yards with a touchdown and adding 70 rushing yards and three more scores on the ground on 15 carries.

Mahomes took matters into his own hands even more than usual in the hard-fought victory against Buffalo, recording 43 rushing yards and two TDs on 11 carries in addition to a 245-yard, one-touchdown effort through the air. Kareem Hunt had 64 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground himself, and rookie Xavier Worthy continued his surge with a 6-85-1 receiving line.

The matchup of Mahomes and his weapons against a stingy Eagles defense that wreaked havoc on opposing ground and air attacks will be an intriguing one, but the Chiefs’ own stalwart defense should prove a steep assignment for Hurts and his teammates.

Although the Eagles were very convincing in their victory Sunday, they’re still opening as a 1.5-point underdog at multiple sportsbooks.

The first-look projected total is 49.5 points.
