In many states, that cash-prize feature is at the center of the legal debate. Washington takes a stricter view than most. Washington’s attorney general has also sued Playtika and Aristocrat over 16 unlicensed apps. The state calls these apps illegal gambling in the lawsuit. What Online Casino Games Used to Be Available in Washington?

Washington has never really been that amenable to online gambling of any kind, even going back to the early days of the internet.

Washington’s hard-line stance dates back to 2006, when the legislature passed SB 6613, amending RCW 9.46.240 to make knowingly transmitting or receiving gambling information over the internet a Class C felony, one of the toughest online gambling laws in the country, arriving just months before the federal government passed its own crackdown that same year. A Washington poker player challenged the law on constitutional grounds, but the state Supreme Court upheld it in 2010 (Rousso v. State).

That statute remains unchanged today, serving as the legal basis regulators cite when scrutinizing sweepstakes casinos as a potentially illegal extension of the online gambling ban lawmakers enacted two decades ago. It’s now also the basis for Washington’s fight with prediction market platforms. A King County judge ordered Kalshi in August 2026 to stop offering sports, election, and other event contracts to Washington users, finding the platform met the state’s legal definition of gambling. Kalshi is fighting the order, with a hearing on its motion for reconsideration set for early September 2026.

Are There Any Legal Ways to Gamble Online in Washington?

Many states let residents bet on sports, play daily fantasy contests, or buy lottery tickets online. Here’s how Washington handles each one.

Sports Betting

Online sports betting isn’t legal in Washington. The state has no licensed mobile sportsbooks. Tribal casinos with approved gaming compacts are the only legal places to place a sports bet. State law does allow wagers sent over the internet. You still have to be physically on the casino’s premises to place one.

That said, the rules got an update in 2026. Senate Bill 6137 took effect on June 11, 2026. It lets tribal casinos take bets on in-state college teams like Gonzaga and the University of Washington. Bets on individual Washington college athletes are still off the table. The new law also bans bets on coaching and officiating calls in Washington college games. None of these changes opened the door to statewide mobile betting.

Daily Fantasy Sports

Paid daily fantasy sports contests are also illegal in Washington. The state’s Gambling Act dates back to 1973. Its definition of a contest of chance covers any game with a material element of chance. Skill can play a role too.

The Legislature has never authorized fantasy sports. State law also bars sending gambling information over the internet. So, these rules keep online DFS out of Washington. Major fantasy operators had already stopped serving the state by late 2015.

State Lottery

Washington’s Lottery sells draw games and scratch tickets. However, you can’t buy any of them online. Per the Lottery, a legal ticket must come from a licensed retailer in Washington. Grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores are common places to find one.
