Who is The Vikings Starting QB: Dobbs Trade & Cousins Injury

The Minnesota Vikings went to work at the trade deadline in the wake of Kirk Cousins’ season-ending Achilles injury, sending Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars but, more importantly, acquiring Arizona Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick. This is Dobbs’ fourth NFL roster since Dec. 21, 2022.

In Week 9, coming off a 24-10 road win over the Green Bay Packers, the Vikings have rookie Jaren Hall and now Dobbs on the depth chart on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. The Vikings are 4.5-point underdogs for that game.

Dobbs and Hall at QB for Minnesota

As mentioned, the only quarterbacks on the Vikings roster now are Dobbs and Hall. In Week 8, Hall finished the game for Minnesota, completing three of four passes for 23 yards and rushing twice for -1 yard in relief of the injured Cousins.

With less than a week to go until the Vikings’ next game, Hall may end up getting the start and then turning the reins over to Dobbs, who started eight games for the Arizona Cardinals this season. Of course, anything can happen between now and Sunday, so it remains to be seen who will take snaps in Week 9.

What’s next for Dobbs and the Minnesota Vikings?

Before the season, Dobbs signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Cleveland Browns. That deal happened on March 20. On Aug. 24, Cleveland shipped Dobbs and his contract to Arizona for a fifth-round pick. Now, the Vikings inherit that same contract. Coming off a win despite losing Cousins, the Vikings are 4-4. They’re two games back of the NFC North, and only four teams, including the Detroit Lions in their own division, have a better record than them.

Cousins was in the final year of his contract with the Vikings. It’s unclear whether he’ll re-sign or move on. For Dobbs, he’ll compete to finish out the year as the Minnesota starter. The results of his play and the Vikings’ record will likely impact their strategy this offseason, whether retaining Cousins and/or Dobbs or venturing into the 2024 NFL draft.
