Kansas City Chiefs Injury Report – Update For Thursday, Feb. 8

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to become the first team since the New England Patriots in 2003-2204 to retain their Super Bowl title as they get ready to take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas this Sunday. After a slower start to the season than some expected, the Chiefs have hit their stride when it mattered most and now look to win a rematch of Super Bowl 54.

The Chiefs enter the game as underdogs despite the chance for Patrick Mahomes and company to win back-to-back Super Bowls. You can watch the game live on CBS at 6:30 p.m. ET from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Potential key missing players

Joe Thuney

The chances of Joe Thuney suiting up in the Super Bowl were always slim. The All-Pro left guard left the team’s divisional round win against the Buffalo Bills early after suffering a pectoral injury and subsequently missed the AFC championship game against the Baltimore Ravens. Thuney missed practice last week and showed up with another DNP on Wednesday’s injury report.

To make matters worse, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid told reporters that he’d bet on Thuney likely not suiting up for the game on Sunday, further casting doubt on his chances. Thuney has been one of the most consistent guards in the NFL for a few years now, and his absence would leave a big hole in the Chiefs’ offensive line.

Chris Jones

Jones appeared on the injury report this week with a quad injury but was a full practice participant. The fact that Jones went through practice as normal is a good sign, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on as the week progresses. Jones’ impact for the Chiefs has been as ever this season, racking up 10.5 sacks and 29 quarterback hits en route to his second-straight first team All-Pro season.

There likely isn’t much to worry about in terms of Jones’ injury, but the fact he’s at least shown up on the injury report this week is interesting.

Jerick McKinnon

Along with Thuney, McKinnon is the only other Chiefs player who wasn’t a full participant at practice on Wednesday. The veteran running back was listed as a limited participant with a groin injury as he ramps up his return after not playing since the team’s win against the New England Patriots in Week 15.

According to Andy Reid, it doesn’t seem all that promising that McKinnon will be ready in time for Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers, but the fact he’s back as a limited participant gives him the slightest chance.
