The Commodity Futures Trading Commission eleased the agenda for its first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting next Thursday, including prediction market regulation.
The meeting will look at the emergence and evolution of the cryptocurrency and prediction markets industry and discuss the future of event contracts.
It kicks off at 1 p.m. with introduction and opening remarks from CFTC Chairman Michael Selig, his senior advisor Michael Passalacqua and Walt Lukken, chair of the committee.
Crypto, AI start the day
The first session will look at cryptocurrency and its “Regulatory Evolution: From Uncertainty to Clarity.”
Topics could include a brief history of the industry and “stories from the trenches,” which would look at navigating the regulatory uncertainty of the new industry.
It will likely also touch on what lies ahead of cryptocurrency and how to build a framework that encourages innovation but also keeps integrity intact.
Committee members will also look to better prepare for the growing effects of the AI.
That could include topics like:
- AI revolution in derivatives
- Rise of agentic finance
- Preparing for the future
Prediction markets ends the day
The committee will finish the day with a session on prediction markets, starting with the growth of the industry and the technologies and market structures driving that growth.
Discussion will also likely include an overview of the current battle between the CFTC and state regulators and the importance of a clearly defined jurisdiction for operators.
Committee members will also likely begin discussing how to build a durable framework for the industry and how to encourage innovation within prediction markets while ensuring the public trusts the products.
The day then ends with comments from Selig.
