Texas favored over Oklahoma ahead of Red River Rivalry
How the Longhorns could win this game and cover the spread
The Texas defense has been excellent this season, holding each opponent so far to 13 points or fewer. Overall, the Longhorns have allowed 35 total points in five games, with Mississippi State holding the single-game mark at 13 in Week 5.
Oklahoma is likely to be the Longhorns’ toughest task yet, but it has scored 16 points or fewer in two of its last four games and barely escaped with a win in Week 5 on the road against Auburn, outscoring the Tigers 17-7 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
In three games at quarterback, Michael Hawkins Jr. has attempted just 37 passes, completing 23 of them, for 310 yards and one touchdown pass. He’s also added 101 rushing yards and a touchdown.
All told, we could end up seeing Oklahoma’s offense, which is averaging just 169.2 passing yards per game, struggle against the Longhorn defense.
How the Sooners could cover the spread and potentially win
The Sooners will likely need to hope that if Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers plays, he’s rusty after missing the last two games with an abdominal injury, potentially leading to some turnovers. The Sooners do average an interception per game.
Offensively, this team needs to have some sort of explosiveness. Hawkins Jr. is averaging 8.4 yards per attempt, and just 8.1% of his attempts have gone 20-plus yards downfield. He’s completed one of three passes at that depth for 60 yards. The rushing attack needs to find a spark, too. Jovantae Barnes leads the team in carries but is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. Behind him is Jackson Arnold.
