DraftKings Sportsbook is finally in West Virginia.
One of the leaders in daily fantasy sports and the early expansion of US sports betting launched its app in the state as of August 2019. Read on for more about what to expect from DraftKings sports betting in WV.
Initially, DraftKings New Jersey covered only the most popular North American and international sports. The original lineup included:
DraftKings guarantees this list to be significantly longer by the time of its West Virginia launch. The company promises to offer more than 60 sports by the end of the year.
Unlike New Jersey, where wagering on college games involving local teams is prohibited, DraftKings won’t have any legal restrictions regarding NCAA events in West Virginia. However, the Mountain State does impose a ban on betting on events that involve minors, which could have a negative impact on e-sports coverage.
DraftKings is known for supporting a wide selection of bet types from standard moneylines and totals to parlays, teasers and futures.
Also in New Jersey, DraftKings’ customers can join betting pools, which is a cross between old-school office pools and paid fantasy sports contests. DraftKings’ pool participants can make several straight-up picks and then face off against one another, competing for a share of the prize pool.
DraftKings Sportsbook was initially launched as a mobile-only platform, with desktop support added later. West Virginia residents are set to get the complete package, which guarantees compatibility with most up-to-date computers as well as iOS and Android mobile devices.
The Apple app is already available in the iTunes Store, but the real-money betting feature won’t go live until the West Virginia Lottery issues DraftKings its online betting license.
The Android app is also already available, but it is only downloadable from DraftKings’ servers due to Google Play Store’s strict no-gambling policy.
Regardless of the platform you choose, you’ll likely enjoy access to the same features and betting options.
As soon as the site becomes available, Mountain State residents should gain access to entirely new in-play betting options.
Unlike BetLucky — the only online sportsbook formerly active in the state — DraftKings is set to offer sport-specific proposition bets and early cash-out option. The cash-out feature is particularly useful as it allows you to avoid late-game surprises or to lose less money if your team isn’t doing well on the field.
Even though the new DraftKings Sportsbook isn’t live in West Virginia yet, local bettors can already deposit funds to the site via a credit/debit card payment or PayPal.
PayPal is more reliable as some banks refuse to process gambling-related transactions even if the site operates in full compliance with federal and state-level laws.
Judging by the New Jersey operation, supported cash-out methods in West Virginia should include PayPal, check by courier and ACH.
DraftKings’ customers will likely also have the option to make a deposit or request a withdrawal in person at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town, which is owned by DraftKings’ West Virginia partner – Penn National Gaming.
West Virginia residents won’t have all the same promotions as New Jersey customers because specific promos are a part of online casino games, which aren’t legal in WV yet.
The other deals are likely to remain intact including DraftKings’ $500 free bet.
DraftKings’ customer service in New Jersey operates 24/7. Players can reach the support team by phone, email or traditional mail. To talk to the staff, you need to fill out a contact form and wait for someone to call you back.
The DraftKings NJ Sportsbook website features an FAQ section which, while not as short as BetLucky’s, doesn’t go as in-depth. For instance, it doesn’t discuss any issues aside from the geolocation software used to prevent players from placing illegal bets.
DraftKings Sportsbook is likely to secure a significant chunk of West Virginia’s online betting market as soon as its paperwork is in order.
However, DraftKings probably won’t become the default platform for all local bettors as FanDuel is also set to expand to West Virginia in 2019.
You cannot ask for much more than what the DraftKings Sportsbook app brings to the table, no matter where you are wagering.
The user experience is streamlined and intuitive, and we hope banking options will continue to improve.
