NFL Coach of the Year favorites
Matt Eberflus,
Eberflus and the Bears kicked off their season with a comeback home victory over the Titans. Down 17-0 in the second quarter, Chicago took control the rest of the way for a 24-17 victory. Caleb Williams, the top overall pick at the NFL Draft, threw for 93 yards in his debut performance, with the defense and special teams chipping in with a pair of TDs. The Bears are second in NFL division odds to win the NFC North. They’re on the road this week for a Sunday Night Football date with the Texans.
Jim Harbaugh,
Harbaugh made his return to the NFL sidelines on Sunday, with the Chargers picking up a 22-10 home win over the Raiders. Justin Herbert threw for 144 yards and a touchdown, while new arrival J.K. Dobbins rushed for 135 and a TD. Los Angeles lost the time-of-possession battle by over three minutes but forced three turnovers in the winning effort. The Chargers are heavy road favorites in Week 2 versus the 0-1 Panthers, who opened with a double-digit loss to the Saints.
Mike Macdonald,
Macdonald picked up the victory in his debut with the Seahawks. Down 13-9 at the half, Seattle took charge the rest of the way for a 26-20 victory, just missing the cover as a 6.5-point home favorite. The club forced three Denver turnovers but also lost two of its own. Kenneth Walker rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks have a lengthy road trip on tap for this week as they travel to take on the Patriots, who surprised with an opening week upset over the Bengals.
DeMeco Ryans,
Ryans and the Texans had a fight on their hands on Sunday, but they managed to exit with a 29-27 road win over the Colts. Houston held a 15-13 halftime lead, with the two clubs trading scores in an entertaining final frame. C.J. Stroud threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns. New arrivals Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs fit right in on offense, accounting for three TDs between them. The team remains the betting favorite to win the AFC South. The Texans will be home on SNF to take on the 1-0 Bears.
Kevin O’Connell,
O’Connell and the Vikings stormed out of the gates with a convincing 28-6 road win over the Giants. Concerns about the offense have been put on hold for the time being. Sam Darnold threw for 208 yards, two TDs, and one pick. Aaron Jones rushed for 94 and a touchdown, and Justin Jefferson hauled in four passes for 59 and a TD. Minnesota faces a stiff test this week — the San Francisco 49ers, one of the favorites in Super Bowl 59 odds, are coming to town.
First-year coaches — is there a connection?
Over the past seven seasons, a first-year head coach has won the award four times. Seven teams hired new head coaches over the offseason.
- Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris, +1400
- Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales, +2000
- Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh, +1100
- New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo, +3500
- Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald, +1600
- Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan, +2500
- Washington Commanders: Dan Quinn, +3000
Morris and Harbaugh are among the offseason favorites to win the award. The Falcons and Chargers are both expected to take some steps forward after disappointing campaigns. The forecast isn’t quite as clear for the five other new hires.
Canales takes over a Panthers team that posted the league’s worst record a season ago at 2-15. There’s optimism that Bryce Young will show some improvement under center after a challenging rookie season. However, the team is last in odds to win the NFC South.
Mayo is tasked with replacing Bill Belichick in New England. The Patriots struggled to a record of 4-13 in Belichick’s final season. The club selected Drake Maye with the third overall pick at the NFL Draft, but it’ll be Jacoby Brissett under center in Week 1.
Macdonald takes over in Seattle following the departure of Pete Carroll. He inherits a team that went 9-8, just missing out on a wild card spot. Callahan will be on the sidelines in Tennessee after the Mike Vrabel era came to an end with a 6-11 mark.
Quinn heads to Washington after spending the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. He was previously a head coach with the Falcons from 2015-20. He made the playoffs twice, losing to the Patriots at the 2017 Super Bowl.
