Belgium is the clear favorite at -220 to get the better of Ukraine, Romania, and Slovenia in Group E at Euro 2024 this summer. The Belgians are currently third in the FIFA world rankings, and they boast a world-class playmaker in Kevin De Bruyne. They have regressed in recent years, but they still look stronger than their Group E rivals.

This appears to be the weakest group at the European Championship. Ukraine struggled during the qualifying campaign, while the Romanian and Slovakian squads are full of unheralded players. However, those three teams are quite evenly matched, so this could prove to be an intriguing group.

Quick notes on Group E teams

Euro 2024 Group E breakdown

Belgium is the heavy favorite to win Group E at soccer betting sites. However, its best players are now on their last legs, so they will need to raise their game against three energetic opponents.

Belgium

Belgium spent four years at the top of the FIFA world rankings between 2018 and 2022, but the team failed to win any trophies. The Belgians finished third at the 2018 World Cup, and they then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Italy in the quarterfinals of the last European Championship. They then flopped at the 2022 World Cup, failing to reach the knockout stage after losing 2-0 to Morocco.

The Belgian golden generation is now consigned to the history books. Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard, and Moussa Dembélé have retired. Toby Alderweireld and Axel Witsel also retired from international soccer last year. Defender Jan Vertonghen is 36, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out with a long-term injury.

Only Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are still going strong. However, there are some promising players coming through the ranks. The likes of Amadou Onana, Jérémy Doku, Johan Bakayoko, and Loïs Openda can bring youthful vitality to complement De Bruyne’s experience, while Leandro Trossard and Youri Tielemans are reliable players. Belgium is still No. 3 in the world rankings, and it is sixth in Euro 2024 futures betting.

Ukraine

Ukraine finished behind England and Italy in its Euro 2024 qualifying group. The Ukrainians ended up in the playoffs, where they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the semifinals and Iceland in the final.

They are the second-favorites to win this group, and they also have odds of just to qualify for the knockout stage of the Euros. There is certainly a great deal of quality on the Ukrainian squad, including Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk, Valencia’s Roman Yaremchuk, and Girona duo Viktor Tsyhankov and Artem Dovbyk.

Ukraine will be a popular team at the tournament, and the players will use it as an opportunity to draw attention to their war-torn country’s plight. They are a hardworking, mentally resilient group, and they will be determined to reach the Round of 16.

Romania

A rock-solid defense helped Romania finish ahead of Switzerland, Israel, Belarus, Kosovo, and Andorra in its qualifying group. The Romanians conceded just five goals in 10 games, and goals from Denis Alibec, Valentin Mihaila, and Nicolae Stanciu put their opponents to the sword.

The most famous name in the squad is defender Radu Dragusin, who recently moved from Genoa to Premier League team Tottenham. He runs a tight ship at the back, while Stanciu is the main man in midfield, and George Puscas and Alibec provide the main threat in attack. Romania is something of an unknown quantity, but its unheralded youngsters will be keen to make a name for themselves this summer.

Slovakia

Slovakia is embarking upon a new era after talismanic midfielder Marek Hamšik retired last year. He scored 26 goals in 138 games for his country, so his influence has been missed. However, the team still has a solid spine.

PSG defender Milan Škriniar captains the team. Stanislav Lobotka of Napoli runs the midfield, and Róbert Boženík is a handful up front. Left-back Dávid Hancko is another standout player. The Slovakians finished second to Portugal in their qualifying group, earning an automatic berth to the Euros.
