Euro 2024 Group D breakdown

France is understandably the favorite to win this group, as its squad is stacked with world-class players. However, all three rivals are strong, so Les Bleus cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

France

France can cement its status as the most successful team of the modern era when it competes in Euro 2024 this summer. Les Bleus won the 2018 World Cup and finished as the runners-up at the 2022 World Cup after losing to Argentina on penalties. They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2021, but they have not won the European Championship since 2000. Their soccer odds for upcoming games and tournaments tend to reflect all this success.

They were runners-up in 2016, but they suffered a shocking Round of 16 defeat to Switzerland at the last Euros. The players will be keen to banish that painful memory by winning this summer’s tournament.

The squad is packed with superb defenders, including Ibrahima Konaté, William Saliba, Jules Koundé, Dayot Upamecano, Benjamin Pavard, and the Hernández brothers. The midfield is decent, while forwards Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, and Ousmane Dembélé are extremely talented.

Netherlands

The Dutch squad also looks formidable. Virgil Van Dijk is the star of the show, but fellow defenders Nathan Aké, Matthijs de Ligt, Micky van de Ven, and Stefan de Vrij are also reliable. There is pace on the wings, including Jeremie Frimpong, Denzel Dumfries, and Donyell Malen.

Midfielder Teun Koopmeiners has been magnificent in Serie A this season, and youngster Xavi Simons has taken the Bundesliga by storm. Cody Gakpo often reserves his best performances for the national team, as does Memphis Depay, and Frenkie de Jong can pull the strings in midfield.

However, the Netherlands lost home and away to France in qualifying, as it could not deal with Mbappé’s pace. There are also question marks regarding manager Ronald Koeman, who struggled at Barcelona.

Austria

The Austrians qualified for this tournament after finishing second to Belgium in their qualifying group. They ended up nine points clear of Sweden, which is an impressive achievement. Austria held Belgium to a 1-1 draw on the road, and it also drew with France in the Nations League in 2022, so it has to be taken seriously.

This team’s key strength lies in midfield. Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer, RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner, and Bayern Munich’s Konrad Laimer are all excellent players, and they form a strong triumvirate behind striker Michael Gregoritsch. The Austrians are well-drilled in defense, too, so they will be tough opponents for their Group D rivals.

Poland

Poland struggled during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, but it secured a place at the tournament after beating Wales in the playoffs. It lacks the technical brilliance of France or the solid defense of the Netherlands, but it is formidable on attack.

That is largely down to the presence of Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 82 goals in 148 games for Poland. The Poles have some talented midfielders, too, including Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski and Roma’s Nicola Zalewski. The defense is a little light, but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is experienced, and Jakub Kiwior has impressed for Arsenal this season, so hope springs eternal for Poland’s fans.
