Quick notes on Group C teams

Euro 2024 Group C breakdown

England is undoubtedly the big fish in this pond. The Three Lions have odds of to win Group C, which could leave the other three teams to battle it out for the runner-up spot.

England

England will attempt to end a 58-year trophy drought when it heads to Germany for the Euros this summer. The Three Lions finished as the runners-up at the last European Championship after suffering a brutal penalty shootout defeat to Italy. They beat the Italians home and away during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, and they are now the favorites to lift this trophy.

That reflects the depth of attacking talent on the squad. Captain Harry Kane has been scoring goals at a record-breaking pace for Bayern Munich this season. Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham are also in sparkling form for their clubs, and that quartet will be difficult for any team to handle.

However, there are still question marks regarding England’s defense. The team has plenty of talented full-backs, but John Stones is the only top-notch center-back in its ranks. Manager Gareth Southgate’s cautious tactics could also hinder England’s chances of success, so it will be interesting to see how the Three Lions fare in Group C.

Denmark

The Danes exceeded expectations by reaching the semifinals of the last European Championship. They lost to England in extra time in that game, but it was nevertheless an impressive performance from Kasper Hjulmand’s side.

However, Denmark flopped at the 2022 World Cup, finishing at the bottom of its group, so it will aim to reclaim some pride at this summer’s tournament. The squad finished level on points with Slovenia in the two teams’ Euro 2024 qualifying group, but Denmark secured first place courtesy of a superior goal differential.

The team looks strong in every department, from veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to 21-year-old Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund. Andreas Christensen, Simon Kjær, and Joachim Anderson offer steel to match the flair of Christian Erkisen, Mikkel Damsgaard, and Yussuf Poulsen, creating a well-balanced team, so Denmark has soccer betting odds of to qualify for the Round of 16.

Serbia

Serbia manager Dragan Stojković has a wealth of attacking riches at his disposal. Aleksandr Mitrović, Dušan Vlahović, and Luka Jović are all dangerous strikers, and Dušan Tadić, Filip Kostić, and Sergej Milinković-Savić are creative in attacking midfield roles.

Unfortunately, the Serbs lack that sort of quality on defense. That proved to be their undoing at the 2022 World Cup, where they lost 2-0 to Brazil, drew 3-3 with Cameroon, and lost 3-2 to Switzerland. Serbia is normally a fun team to watch, but Stojković will need to tighten up the defense if his team is to reach the Round of 16 at this tournament.

Slovenia

Slovenia has qualified for its first major tournament since the 2010 World Cup. It finished level with Denmark at 22 points apiece in their qualifying group, with 20 goals scored and nine conceded in 10 games. However, it struggled in the head-to-heads against the Danes, losing 2-1 on the road and drawing 1-1 at home.

There are many unheralded players on the Slovenian squad, but a couple stand out. Captain Jan Oblak is arguably the best goalkeeper in the business, having performed at a very high level for Atlético Madrid over the past decade. Young striker Benjamin Šeško has also been superb for RB Leipzig this season, and he could be a handful for Slovenia’s opponents in Group C.
