What is live roulette?
Live dealer roulette is an online casino game run by a real croupier, who will be based either in a dedicated studio or a retail casino.
The roulette dealer will use real casino equipment, and you can watch the action in real-time via a video stream. To place bets, just select your chips and click or tap the screen.
It is more sociable than virtual roulette, as you can chat with the dealer — and sometimes other players — during the game. Live dealer online roulette is designed to closely mimic the experience of visiting a brick-and-mortar casino, but it is more convenient, as you can play via your computer or mobile device at any time.
Best live roulette casino sites and apps
Live roulette is available on every casino app that supports live dealer play. These are the best live roulette apps for anyone interested in playing on Android or iOS:
BetMGM Casino
BetMGM Casino offers a world-class casino app, replete with a large variety of slots, virtual table games and live dealer options. You can play several European and American roulette games via the BetMGM app, including classic games and variants such as Lightning Roulette and auto roulette.
If you are in New Jersey, you can also connect with a dealer at Borgata in Atlantic City and play via your iPhone or Android device. That helps to set BetMGM apart from its competitors. This option is unavailable in Pennsylvania, Michigan or West Virginia, but it offers a strong range of games in those states.
New customers can claim a 100% first deposit bonus of up to $1,000, plus $25 on the house, via the BetMGM Casino bonus code LSRBONUS. The $25 on the house is available to use on live roulette games.
DraftKings Casino
DraftKings is another elite mobile casino with a strong live dealer section. Its live roulette games include classic European roulette, VIP European roulette, Auto Roulette, Lightning Auto Roulette, an exclusive DraftKings Speed Roulette, American roulette and Auto American Roulette. The VIP European roulette game has limits of $1 to $10,000 per bet. Other games have minimum bets as low as $0.10 per spin.
Unlike rival casino apps, DraftKings’ live dealer roulette games feature progressive jackpots, which give you the chance to win large payouts. There will always be a minor, major and mega jackpot, and the top prizes can hit seven figures at times.
DraftKings offers new customers a 100% deposit match bonus of up to $100, plus $35 in extra casino credits.
FanDuel Casino
FanDuel has a higher average user rating than any other live dealer roulette app on Google Play and the App Store. That reflects the smooth user experience and the all-round quality of the app. It has a dedicated section for roulette games, which you can access via the main menu on the homepage.
Virtual games include French, European and American roulette. If you would like to play live roulette, it offers Auto Roulette, Lightning Roulette, American roulette and a FanDuel-branded American roulette game. Auto Roulette is probably the best option, as it only has a single zero, giving it a better RTP rate than the American roulette games.
The FanDuel Casino welcome bonus offers a refund if you end up with a net loss after your first 24 hours. The refund will take the form of bonus credits and will have a $100 maximum. The bonus credits will have a 1x wagering requirement.
Caesars Palace Online Casino
There are three live dealer roulette games on the Caesars Palace Casino app — European, American and Lightning variants. As we go over below, Lightning Roulette by Evolution Gaming offers you the chance to win larger payouts on single number bets if the lightning multiplier strikes.
The app is quick and user-friendly, and it offers various bonuses. New customers using the promo code ROCKY2500 at registration, will receive a 100% deposit match bonus of up to $2,500, plus 2,500 points toward the Caesars Rewards program if you wager at least $25.
Bally Casino
The Bally Casino app offers several virtual roulette games, including French roulette, 10c Roulette and a couple of exclusives. If you visit the “Live Dealer” section, you will find a link to the live roulette lobby. Venture into this area to browse your options, which include regular live dealer European roulette and Auto Roulette, with limits of $0.50 to $5,000 per bet. Lightning Roulette and Dream Catcher — a roulette-inspired game — are also available.
The Bally Casino bonus code of (Coming Soon!) will qualify you for a no deposit bonus of $50 plus a refund in cash to match any net loss during your first seven days up to $100.
Live dealer roulette vs. regular roulette
For many years, roulette games at online casinos were solely powered by random number generators. The same software also provides the results when you play online slots and in-person slots, along with other virtual table games. The RNG tools receive regular testing to ensure fair, reliable results.
The advent of live dealer roulette means that RNG software is no longer necessary, as you can watch a physical roulette wheel spin in real time instead. However, virtual roulette games still sit alongside live dealer games at the top online casinos. These are the pros and cons of each option:
Live dealer roulette | Regular virtual roulette |
Live dealer roulette games provide a realistic experience, which closely matches a visit to a land-based casino. | There are often more virtual roulette games than live dealer games, so you will benefit from greater choice. |
These games can provide more atmosphere, suspense, camaraderie and sociability thanks to the live chat option. | You can play virtual roulette games at your own pace, without having to wait for other players to make their moves. |
There are some entertaining live dealer roulette variants, such as Lightning Roulette and Quantum Roulette. | French roulette — which has the highest return-to-player rate — is often available as a virtual game at US online casinos, but it is generally not available as a live dealer game. |
You need a reasonably powerful internet connection to play live dealer roulette. | Virtual roulette does not require such a strong connection, and you do not need to worry about lags. |
Very few online casinos allow you to play live dealer roulette in demo mode with virtual credits. | You can play virtual roulette for fun in demo mode using virtual chips, which have no monetary value, and this helps you learn the game without risking your own funds. |
How to play live dealer roulette
It is quick and easy to play live dealer roulette at leading online casinos such as DraftKings, BetMGM and FanDuel. Follow these steps:
- Visit your chosen live dealer roulette casino by clicking the “play now” button next to it in the table above.
- Open the sign-up form and fill in your name, address, date of birth, phone number, email address and last four digits of your Social Security number. If you need a promo code, clicking a link from this page should add it to the form. If not, type it in, such as (Coming Soon!) at Bally Casino.
- Choose a password. Agree to the site’s terms and conditions and complete the form. It will try to verify your age and identity, though you may need to provide extra documentation.
- Visit the online cashier and make a deposit.
- You can then search for roulette games via the main casino lobby, or head to the live dealer section to see which games are available. Choose a game and fire it up.
- Tap or click the screen to place your chips down on the table. Options include betting on things like whether the ball will land on red or black or an odd or even number. Those bets pay 1:1. Or you can bet on the ball landing on a specific number, which will pay 35:1. Alternatively, you can lay your chips across two, three or four numbers.
- The dealer will acknowledge your wager, spin the wheel and drop the ball onto it. If it lands on the right pocket, you will win, and your profit will appear in your balance. You can repeat this process as many times as you like. Remember to gamble responsibly.
States with legal live dealer roulette
Online casino gambling is legal in six states right now. Delaware’s online casinos do not have access to live dealer games, so these are the five states in which you can play live dealer roulette:
Connecticut
Evolution Gaming’s Connecticut studio supplies the Nutmeg State’s two online casinos — DraftKings and Mohegan Sun — with live roulette games. You can play classic European roulette and Lightning Roulette with live dealers if you visit one of those casino apps.
The Mohegan Sun online casino platform in Connecticut is powered by FanDuel, so you will notice FanDuel branding on the roulette tables.
Michigan
The first online casinos launched in Michigan in January 2021. They only offered virtual roulette for the first six months, but Evolution then opened a studio in Detroit that summer. It provides Michigan’s legal online casinos with European and American roulette games, including Lightning Roulette and Auto Roulette variants.
Playtech also runs a rival live dealer studio in the state. It does not supply as many apps as Evolution, but you can find its live roulette games at Play Gun Lake. Options include Quantum Roulette and Mega Fire Blaze Roulette.
New Jersey
New Jersey became the first state to host live roulette games when Evolution entered the market in 2018. The Swedish company has since launched a second studio in the state, allowing it to provide NJ online casinos with an array of roulette games.
Playtech also has a New Jersey studio, and its games were first available in the state at bet365. BetMGM and sister site Borgata also allow New Jersey customers to play live roulette beamed directly from Borgata in Atlantic City. Mohegan Sun NJ offers a similar service, allowing online players to stream roulette directly from the casino floor at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.
Pennsylvania
Evolution Gaming is the sole provider of live dealer games in Pennsylvania. It expanded into the state in 2020, when it opened a studio in Philadelphia after gaining a license from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The company supplies all the leading Pennsylvania online casinos with live dealer roulette games. Options include standard European roulette, VIP European roulette, American roulette and Lightning Roulette.
West Virginia
West Virginia permits online casinos to source live dealer roulette games from Evolution’s studio in Pennsylvania. It means all the same games are available in the Mountain State — regular European roulette, VIP European roulette, Lightning Roulette and American roulette.
Each online casino can choose its own bet limits for live dealer roulette, so they often vary depending on which app you download. If you would like to play with higher limits, DraftKings is a good choice. Caesars Palace Casino is another high-quality option, though it does not offer the progressive jackpots that DraftKings does.

Available games
There are three main roulette variants — French roulette, European roulette and American roulette. French roulette offers the best return-to-player rate, but it is not yet available as a live casino game in the United States.
All live dealer games will be European or American variants, but some of them have additional features and multipliers to jazz up the action. These are the main games to look out for:
Live European roulette
This is your best option when playing live dealer roulette at an online casino. It only has a single zero on the wheel, which gives the house an edge of 2.7%. That results in a return-to-player rate of 97.3%, which is reasonably high.
If a live dealer game is simply referred to as “roulette,” it is highly likely to be a European (single zero) version. The bet limits on European roulette vary, but some start at just $0.10 per spin, and VIP European roulette at DraftKings Casino goes up to $10,000 per bet.
Live American roulette
American roulette features a single zero and a double zero. That means your chances of winning a side bet such as red/black are 18 in 38, as opposed to 18 in 37 on a European roulette wheel. It results in a house edge of 5.26%, giving you a theoretical RTP rate of 94.74%.
That RTP rate is worse than most slots, and it is very poor for a table game. You should never play American roulette unless you have a specific incentive to do so, such as a compelling bonus. Always choose single-zero roulette instead of its double-zero counterpart.
Live auto roulette
This version of roulette works automatically, without the need for a croupier. However, it is still available as a live casino game. You can stream the action from a studio or land-based casino, and you will watch the ball drop automatically onto the wheel, between 60 and 80 times per hour.
Evolution Gaming offers an auto roulette option. Some online casinos also allow you to stream auto roulette from land-based casinos, such as Resorts Atlantic City in New Jersey. In that case, the game will feature a mix of players in Atlantic City and online players.
Live Lightning Roulette
Lightning Roulette offers a twist on the classic European roulette game. It has all the bets you find on a standard roulette game, along with between one and five randomly generated “lucky numbers” offering payouts of between 50x and 500x.
The dealer will spin the wheel, just like any other roulette game. If the ball lands on a particular pocket, the dealer will pull a lever, and all the panels on the wheel are struck by “lightning,” with both visual and sound effects. A random number generator selects between one and five lucky numbers in this process, and straight-up bets on winning numbers can increase by between 50x and 500x. However, single number bets only pay 29:1, as opposed to 35:1 on a regular roulette game.Evolution Gaming created Lightning Roulette. Playtech responded by launching a similar game called Quantum Roulette, which offers up to 1,000x multipliers. It also provides a Mega Fire Blaze Roulette game, which features a bonus round.
Evolution has now hit back by launching Lightning Roulette XXXtreme, which has a higher volatility, but that game has not yet made its debut in any US markets.
Live roulette software providers
There are only two live roulette providers in the United States right now. Evolution Gaming dominates the market, supplying DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars Palace, Bally and most other leading online casinos. The company is based in Stockholm. It has always specialized in live dealer games, but it also owns slots and virtual table game providers such as NetEnt and Red Tiger.
Playtech is the world’s largest provider of online gambling software, but it is more of an upstart rival to Evolution in the US live dealer market. The London-listed company is only active in New Jersey and Michigan, and it does not supply many casinos yet. However, it is worth seeking out if you are interested in accessing a broader variety of live roulette games in those states.
Things to remember when playing live casino roulette
Choose the right game: As mentioned above, selecting the live dealer roulette variants with the highest RTP rates will improve your chances of success. Always choose European (single zero) roulette ahead of American (double zero) roulette, as it has a significantly lower house edge.
- Consider the payout rates on each game: If you opt for a variant such as Lightning Roulette, consider the different payout rates on specific betting options. For example, individual number bets are paid out at 35:1 when you play a standard European roulette game, resulting in a 2.7% house edge. However, individual numbers only pay 29:1 when you play Lightning Roulette, which increases the house edge to 18.92%. Your payouts can be multiplied if “Lightning” strikes, but you must be prepared to receive a lower payout if you do not benefit from the multiplier. This will help you manage your bankroll during a session.
- Manage your bankroll sensibly: You will have a 48.6% chance of success each time you place a red/black, odd/even or high/low side bet on a single zero roulette wheel. It means that this game is not particularly volatile, but it can occasionally lead to prolonged losing streaks or winning streaks.
- Consider the table limits: Make sure you find a table with limits that suit your bankroll. You can normally click the information button alongside a game to check out the minimum and maximum bets. Some online casinos have VIP tables for high rollers.
FAQs
You can play online roulette with a live dealer at licensed online casinos in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia and Connecticut. You just need to be 21 or older and located in one of those states to play at legal casino sites and apps such as DraftKings Casino.
Live dealer roulette hooks you up to a studio via a video link, allowing you to play this popular casino game with a real dealer. You can click the screen to place your bets, and the dealer will then spin the wheel. A chat option allows you to interact with the dealer throughout.
The best live dealer roulette game is the European (single zero) version. It has a significantly higher return-to-player rate than the American (double zero) variant. French roulette has an even higher RTP percentage than European roulette, but none of the licensed online casinos in the United States currently offer it as a live dealer game.
Live dealer roulette games will never be rigged if you play at licensed, regulated online casinos. Those games undergo observation and testing from independent examiners to ensure that players receive a fair gambling experience, and the equipment receives testing for fairness and accuracy, as is also the case for the roulette wheels at brick-and-mortar casinos.
You can find legitimate live dealer roulette games by signing up at a legal online casino in your state. Just make sure it is licensed by the relevant regulator — the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Michigan Gaming Control Board, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board or the West Virginia Lottery.
