What is live casino blackjack?

Live dealer blackjack is an online casino game hosted by a real dealer in a studio.

You can stream real money blackjack games on your computer or mobile device, and you can play hands against the dealer. Just click or tap the screen to place your bets, and the cards will be dealt. If you win, the winnings will show up in your balance.

A live chat feature will allow you to interact with the dealer and with other players. This is designed to make the game more sociable, but there is no obligation to join in the chat if you do not want to. You can play as many hands as you like, and you can also exit the game at any time.

Where to play blackjack live in the US

Every online casino with live dealer capabilities offers multiple blackjack games. We have reviewed all the licensed casino sites and apps in the United States, focusing on game variety, game quality, bonuses, payout speeds, reliability and the user experience. These are the best live dealer blackjack casinos:

Live dealer blackjack games are legally available in five states — Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Delaware also permits online casino gambling, but there are no live blackjack studios in the state.

Live casino blackjack games are available in Michigan and have been since the summer of 2021. There are 15 online casinos in Michigan, all offering live table games. Most host games from Evolution’s Detroit studio, but rival supplier Playtech also provides some Michigan online casinos with a different suite of games.

That means you can play a wide variety of live blackjack options in the state, from Infinite Blackjack and Lightning Blackjack to Lounge Blackjack and Cashback Blackjack. However, the classic blackjack variants tend to have the best theoretical payout rates.

New Jersey

New Jersey online casinos have the country’s largest and most established live casino sector. Evolution Gaming launched in the state in 2018, and it now has two large NJ studios, while Playtech also provides competition through its rival studio.

There are 28 online casinos in New Jersey. They all host a variety of live blackjack games, but the bet limits can vary according to which app you download. If you would like to play blackjack games from Playtech, bet365 Casino and BetParx host them. Most leading online casinos in New Jersey feature games like Infinite Blackjack and Speed Blackjack from Evolution.

Pennsylvania’s 19 regulated online casinos have had access to live dealer blackjack games since 2020. You can play standard live dealer blackjack, scalable Infinite Blackjack, Free Bet Blackjack and Infinite Free Bet Blackjack in the state.

These games are available via licensed PA online casino sites and apps. Leading platforms in Pennsylvania include BetMGM Casino, DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars Palace, Bally Casino and BetRivers.

West Virginia

West Virginia is the only state that allows online casinos to host live dealer games that take place in studios located in a different state. All WV casino apps and websites can stock games from the Evolution Gaming studio in Pennsylvania, which provides access to a pretty broad array of blackjack titles. Those games include Infinite Blackjack, Free Bet Blackjack and regular blackjack. The bet limits are generally $1 to $5,000 in West Virginia, and you can play these games 24/7 via online casinos that are licensed and regulated by the West Virginia Lottery.

Live blackjack casinos arrived in Connecticut on July 11, 2022. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection authorized Evolution Gaming to supply the state’s two online casinos — DraftKings and the FanDuel-powered Mohegan Sun Casino — with blackjack and roulette games via a studio in Fairfield.

The studio employs 400 people, and it allows CT online casinos to offer regular live blackjack, Speed Blackjack and Infinite Blackjack. The latter allows an infinite number of players to sit at the table, so you will never be unable to play live blackjack in Connecticut.

Live dealer blackjack vs. regular virtual blackjack

Most real-money blackjack games have historically used random number generators. These tools, which also power slot machines, work in the background. They produce a huge variety of long-chain numbers per second, and the number at the precise time you hit the bet button will dictate the result. State regulators test the RNG tools on a routine basis to ensure fairness and reliability.

Live blackjack casinos are different. They remove the need for RNG tools, as a human dealer runs the game, and you watch it unfold in real-time. These games are also tightly regulated in Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Live dealer blackjackRegular virtual blackjack
Offers an experience that aims to closely replicate a visit to a land-based casino.Multiple variations including side-bets.
Chatting with fellow players and the dealer can create a more communal and convivial experience than playing virtual games. You are more likely to find virtual blackjack games with very high RTP rates, such as single-deck blackjack.
It is a lot quicker and more convenient to play live dealer blackjack than to visit a brick-and-mortar casino.Online casinos allow you to play virtual blackjack for free in demo mode, so you can master the game, whereas live blackjack is generally unavailable in demo mode.
You need a reasonably strong and reliable internet connection to play live dealer blackjack, which is less of an issue when playing virtual blackjack. You can play virtual blackjack at your own pace, without waiting for fellow players and the dealer to move the game along.
Live blackjack games tend to have narrower betting limits than virtual games. You can play multi-hand blackjack as a virtual game, but it is not currently available as a live dealer game at US online casinos.

How to play live dealer blackjack

First, you will need to join a reputable online blackjack casino with a live dealer studio. Choose one of the sites listed above and click its link to head to the casino site and create an account.

Open the registration form and fill in your personal, contact details and a casino bonus code, if applicable. Choose a password, agree to the terms, complete the form and – if necessary – upload any supporting documents to validate your identity. You can then make an initial deposit and follow these steps:

  1. Head to the blackjack section or the live dealer section of the online casino to see which games are available. There will generally be a quick link on the homepage to the live dealer games.
  2. Choose a live blackjack game that looks appealing and click on it. You will see some basic information about the mechanics of the game, and you can then enter.
  3. You will see the dealer at a table, and your username will appear at one of the seats. Choose how much you want to bet, and click the screen to lay down your chips.
  4. The dealer will hand out two cards face up to each player at the table. The dealer will also receive two cards — one face up and one face down.
  5. The combined score of your two cards will appear on the screen, close to your chips. You can choose to stand, which means you take no more cards. Alternatively, you can hit, which means you will receive another card. You can hit multiple times, but you go bust and lose if the total value of the cards exceeds 21.
  6. When all the players at the table have played their hands, the dealer will do the same. If you get closer to 21 than the dealer, you win.
  7. If that happens, your winnings will then appear in your account balance on the screen. If you wish to keep playing, you can then lay down your chips again at the start of the next hand. A button allows you to automatically place the same size bet as your previous hand.

Available games

All live casino blackjack games follow the same format: You aim to build a hand closer to 21 than the dealer, but you go bust and lose if your cards exceed 21. However, there are several variants of the game at online casinos, which include different side bets and multipliers.

Classic blackjack

You can always play the classic blackjack game with live dealers at legal online casinos in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Connecticut. Evolution Gaming’s version features eight decks, and blackjack pays 3:2. You can double down and split pairs, just like blackjack at brick-and-mortar casinos.

The main game has a return-to-player rate of 99.28%. It offers two additional side bets — Perfect Pairs and 21+3 — which have RTP percentages of 95.9% and 96.3% respectively. You can also take optional insurance.

Playtech offers a classic live blackjack game in a couple of states, too. It is very similar, with eight decks, but its RTP rate is 99.5%. This game also offers Perfect Pairs and 21+3 side bets.

Infinite Blackjack

This scalable game offers unlimited seats. All players receive the same two-card hand, but you then can play it any way you like. This format ensures that you never encounter a situation whereby you cannot play live blackjack due to space constraints.

The main Infinite Blackjack game has a 99.47% RTP rate. There are four optional side bets — Any Pair, 21+3, Hot 3 and Bust It.

High Roller Blackjack

This version of classic blackjack simply has higher betting limits than the standard game. It is available at DraftKings Casino, which also offers four jackpots — mini, minor, major and mega.

In some markets, Evolution Gaming offers Salon Privé Blackjack games and VIP blackjack for high rollers, so they may appear at some point.

Lightning Blackjack

Lightning Blackjack is a live dealer game that offers the chance to win multiplied payouts. The initial RTP is 99.56%, but you then need to factor in the fees that you pay to fund the multipliers, as they can increase the house edge.

You will be charged a “lightning fee” of 100% your initial bet. RNG software then assigns a multiplier at random to each hand value. You will receive a guaranteed multiplier of between 2x and 25x on each winning hand.

Free Bet Blackjack

Evolution’s Free Bet Blackjack offers a unique twist on the classic game: free double down bets and free splits on specific hands. That improves your chances of success.

However, there is one drawback — the dealer pushes rather than loses on a hand of 22. That takes the RTP down to 98.45%. Some online casinos offer an Infinite Free Bet Blackjack game with unlimited seats.

Cashback Blackjack

This live blackjack game from Playtech has a 99.56% RTP rate on the main bet. It gives you the chance to cash in your hand for an agreed monetary value before the dealer plays.

That essentially gives you a degree of insurance if you do not like the look of the cards. It is similar to the surrender rules, but you can cash in your hand at any time during the round, whereas surrender is only available in certain circumstances.

Power Blackjack

Power Blackjack is part of Evolution’s Infinite range, which permits an unlimited number of players to take part concurrently. It uses eight decks, but without the 9s and 10s, meaning 64 fewer cards in the shoe.

This game gives you the chance to double down, triple down or quadruple down after any initial two cards, even after a split. It has a 98.8% RTP rate. There are four optional side bets — Any Pair, 21+3, Hot 3 and Bust It.

Live dealer via Evolution and Playtech.

There are currently two live casino software providers in the United States — Evolution Gaming and Playtech.

Evolution specializes in live dealer play, and it dominates the US market. Its games include regular live blackjack, Infinite Blackjack, Power Blackjack, Lightning Blackjack and Free Bet Blackjack. The company has studios in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Connecticut, and its Pennsylvania studio also covers West Virginia.

Playtech is a large European company but is relatively small in terms of the US live dealer market. It has studios in New Jersey and Michigan and it supplies games like Cashback Blackjack to a few online casinos in those states. More providers, such as Pragmatic Play, may enter the US market in the future, and we’ll provide updates if that happens.

Things to remember when playing live blackjack

Blackjack’s popularity is largely due to its high RTP rate. However, you need to take specific steps to ensure you receive that rate:

Choose the games with the lowest house edge

Your chances of enjoying a successful blackjack session will improve if you play the games with the lowest house edge. Infinite Blackjack from Evolution Gaming has a 99.47% RTP rate, which equates to a house edge of just 0.53%. Playtech’s standard live dealer blackjack game has a 99.5% RTP rate, resulting in a 0.5% house edge. Its Cashback Blackjack game has an even lower house edge of 0.44%, so that may be the best game for you to play.

It is worth noting that the stated RTP may not give a true indication of the house edge. For example, Lightning Blackjack by Evolution has an impressive 99.56% RTP rate, resulting in a house edge of 0.44%. However, closer examination shows that this only applies to the first hand dealt from the shoe. Subsequent hands need to factor in the “Lightning” fee and the multipliers, which can take the house edge to above 10%. If you are unsure, it is generally best to play classic blackjack rather than weird and wonderful variants.

Check the payout rates

Make sure you play a live dealer game that pays 3:2 on blackjack. That is generally the case, but you will sometimes find that it only pays 6:5. That significantly increases the house edge, so steer clear of any games in which you only get paid 6:5 if you are dealt blackjack (an ace with any face card or 10).

Play perfect blackjack

You will only unlock the full RTP rate if you play perfect blackjack. That means you must make the optimal decisions with each hand. These are some of the most important points to follow:

Treat the dealer with respect

You can interact with the dealer via the live chat feature, but it is important to show respect and to be courteous. It can be frustrating if a hand goes against you, but online casinos will not tolerate abuse of the dealers. You may not be face-to-face with the dealer, but still show the same level of civility that you would at a brick-and-mortar casino.

How do you win at live dealer blackjack?

You simply need to get closer to 21 than the dealer without busting. Over the course of a session, you will improve your chances of success by playing perfect blackjack, which requires you to make the optimal strategic decisions.

Can the live blackjack dealers see you?

No — while you can see the live blackjack dealers, they cannot see you. However, you can interact using the live chat feature, which makes the game more sociable than simply playing virtual, RNG-powered blackjack.

How often does a live blackjack dealer bust?

Dealers will bust around 29% of the time if they stand on all 17s when playing a standard six-deck blackjack game. If the rules stipulate that the dealer must hit a soft 17, the dealer will bust just under 30% of the time.

Is live dealer blackjack rigged?

Live blackjack games at licensed online casinos are not rigged. They receive routine testing from state regulators — or from authorized agencies acting on behalf of state regulators — to check for fairness, reliability and accuracy.

How do I find a legit live dealer blackjack casino?

You simply need to play live dealer blackjack at a regulated online casino in your state. Look for the logo of the relevant regulator — the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Michigan Gaming Control Board, West Virginia Lottery or Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection — to ensure you are playing at a legitimate live dealer casino.
