PointsBet Ontario launch and partnerships

April 4, 2022, was the official launch date of online sports betting in the province of Ontario. PointsBet was one of 12 sites that launched that day, competing alongside industry-leading names such as FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, and others.

Like other legal sportsbooks in the province, PointsBet is registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. PointsBet already has a long list of relevant partners, including the NHL, Curling Canada, Alpine Canada, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Toronto FC.

How to sign up at PointsBet Ontario betting site

Select the sign-up button on the PointsBet Ontario page and start the registration process. This only takes a few minutes and includes you sharing some identification details:

The final step includes confirming that you understand the website’s privacy policy and terms and conditions and selecting the join button.

Account verification

Once your PointsBet account is ready, you may need to verify it by providing some ID documentation. Valid forms of ID include the following:

All documents must be in English. Account management may take a few hours to verify the documents, and if all is in order, you’ll be free to make a deposit and start using your newly created account.

Downloading the PointsBet Sportsbook Ontario app

Mobile betting is one of PointsBet’s stronger attributes. It has excellent apps for both iOS and Android users, available for download at the bottom of the PointsBet website through the respective App Store and Google Play links.

Once you’re in the store, tap to download and install the app, provided your device meets the app’s size and technical requirements. After installing the app, load it up, create an account, or log in to your existing account.

Another thing to install is Player Location Check, a tool that confirms your location in Ontario while using the sportsbook. If you are not in Ontario, you won’t be able to bet.

Best sportsbook features at PointsBet Ontario

PointsBet has had a successful first few months in Ontario. Here are three features that stood out from our review:

Name a bet

This allows you to request a wager not currently available at the sportsbook. To do so, select “name a bet” from the menu and go to “request your bet.” From there, enter your email, choose a sport, and type in what you want to bet on. For instance, you can request a bet that Pascal Siakam scores 22 or more points and grabs 12 or more rebounds in a game.

This option works for multiple sports and competitions, from hockey to baseball, MMA, soccer, motorsports, and more. Once you’ve submitted your request, PointsBet will price it and send it to your account. You won’t be committed to the bet in any way, so you are free to reject it once you see the odds. This may take some time, so submit a request well in advance. PointsBet may also decline to provide odds for undisclosed reasons.

Partial cash-out

Cashing out early is nothing new in online betting, but PointsBet is one of the few sportsbooks to allow partial options.

If you’re concerned your active bet might lose, you can request a partial cash-out, thus withdrawing some of the money back to your account while leaving the rest to see the end of your wager. You can choose the amount you want to cash out by selecting the cash-out option on your active bet and using the slider.

PointsBetting

PointsBetting is a signature feature. However, when it comes to Ontario, AGCO does not allow the option at the moment. In case that changes, though, here is how it works.

Essentially, the more that your bet is correct by, the more money you win. However, the opposite is also true — if your bet loses, you can lose more money depending on how wrong you ended up being.

Say, for example, that you wager $50 that there would be over five goals in a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning. The game ends with Toronto winning 4-3, meaning there were two more goals than the suggested number. This multiplies your win by two, so if it had even odds to start with, you would profit $100 for a total payout of $150.

However, if there were only three total goals (two below the mark), you would lose $100. To prevent yourself from losing too much, you can adjust the loss limit, which also limits how much you can win.

Live betting on the PointsBet Sportsbook app

When you open the PointsBet betting app, you’ll see three main tabs near the top — featured, live, and next up. The live tab contains games that are happening at the moment, and you can browse them by sport and competition.

Most options feature a live tracker that helps you visualize what’s happening while also containing key stats, matchup history, live commentary, play-by-play and more. Some games are also available to stream live, and you can create live same-game parlays for NBA and NFL games and potentially other options in the future.

The “next up” tab is also useful, showing upcoming games and the countdown when they are scheduled to start.

You can place in-game bets, from all the standard options to additional live wagers, such as the winner of the next quarter or who will win the next point in a tennis match. The blue and red arrows indicate the latest change in live odds.

Basic bets available on the PointsBet app

Unless PointsBetting becomes available in Ontario, you’ll need to stick to the regular fixed-odds wagers that PointsBet offers. Here are the most popular bets, with examples:

Single-game parlays at PointsBet Ontario

Initially popularized by FanDuel, single-game parlays are now available on many legal online sportsbooks in Ontario.

A single-game parlay works like a regular parlay, except it lets you combine bets from the same event. For example, you can bet on the Toronto Raptors to win, for the total number of points to go over the sportsbook’s line, and for Scottie Barnes to score more than 19.5 points.

This option is available on select games at PointsBet, mostly for major sports. There’s also the live same-game parlay, which is currently only available for NBA and NFL games.

How long does it take to settle a winning bet at PointsBet?

PointsBet settles wagers shortly after an event finishes, and once all the stats and scores become official.

Player props, game props, and more at PointsBet Ontario

PointsBet has extensive options for proposition bets, matched only by the biggest of its Ontario competitors, such as FanDuel and DraftKings. Here are some of the more exotic props you can find on featured games:

Deposits/withdrawals

PointsBet accepts a variety of banking solutions in Ontario through which you can deposit and withdraw safely and without waiting too long. Here are your current choices:

Interac is a popular Canadian-based payment option that lets you transfer the funds from your bank account directly to an online betting account. It is connected to all major Canadian banks, including the National Bank of Canada, Toronto Dominion Bank, Royal Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Scotiabank, and Bank of Montreal.

The minimum deposit is $5 for PayPal and $10 for all other methods. PayPal also has no maximum withdrawal limit.

Does PointsBet pay instantly?

PointsBet doesn’t offer instant withdrawals, but the sportsbook processes payments relatively quickly and in line with the industry averages. The withdrawal requests usually take 24 to 48 hours, and it further takes 30 minutes to several business days for the funds to reach your account, depending on the method.

Customer support and responsible gambling

PointsBet has contact options at the bottom of its homepage. These include around-the-clock live chat, email (customercare@pointsbet.com), and phone (1-833-441-1940). Furthermore, you can use the help section to inform yourself about the sportsbook’s rules, your account, payments, and other technicalities.

PointsBet complies with AGCO’s responsible gambling measures, letting you set amount or time-based limits or self-exclude for six months, twelve months, or five years. The website and app also contain links to gambling prevention programs and help centers, including ConnexOntario and RGC.
