With sports betting legalization sweeping the country, new sportsbooks are a relatively common sight. One of the newest players, Betr Sportsbook, has opened its doors in Ohio, where legal sports betting is live as of 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2023.
The company, formerly Instabet, is founded by boxer and internet celebrity Jake Paul. An expansion to Massachusetts, where it has been approved for a license, and other states is expected to follow.
Betr is something of a nontraditional sportsbook, with a stated mission to “disrupt legacy gambling and legacy media.” More specifically, though, Betr is a micro-betting sportsbook. That means that rather than betting on the winner of a game or a point spread, Betr focuses on betting on the outcomes of individual events within the game, whatever is about to happen next. In football, that means betting on plays and drives; in basketball, shots and possessions; in baseball, pitches, and at-bats.
Betr is the first dedicated sportsbook to launch an app (available on iOS and Android) specifically dedicated to micro-betting. The company has also built up some significant momentum, having already raised over $50 million from various backers. The next step is a free-to-play version available in all 50 states and, most importantly, a real money launch in Ohio.
To launch in Ohio, Betr partnered with Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment, located in Canton (site of the NFL Hall of Fame). Thanks to that partnership, the Ohio Casino Control Commission granted an online sports betting license to Betr on November 16, 2022. This meant that sports bettors in the state get to be the first to determine whether Jake Paul’s micro-betting platform has what it takes to succeed in a challenging industry, starting when it went live on New Year’s Day, 2023.

Betr Sportsbook promo and welcome offer: November 2024
When Betr Sportsbook Ohio debuted, it offered new users a $100 in bonus credits just for signing up. Unfortunately the offer was only valid for January 2022. At this time Betr does not have a welcome bonus. This section will be updated if and when Betr unveils a new sign-up bonus offer

For the first month it was in service Betr offered users who signed up and verified their identity, a welcome bonus worth up to $100. As long as you meet those criteria, you received $100 in bonus credits within 12 hours of finalizing your account registration and verifying your identity.
As of November 5, 2024, Betr does not have a welcome bonus, but it does have a bet match bonus for existing users that’s fairly decent. As long as you’ve made at least one deposit and one cash wager with Betr, you’re eligible. Opt into the Betr bet match promo, and the next bet you place with minimum multiplier odds of 1.3x will be matched 100% for up to $100. The match comes as a bet credit bonus.
This is a comparatively small bonus, considering that there are sportsbooks in Ohio like DraftKings and FanDuel that are offering deals that can net you $200 in site credit for wagering $5, or like Caesars and BetMGM, where you can place an insured first bet for maximums of $1,000 or more. Nonetheless, this bonus is suited to the same kinds of casual bettors that the micro-betting concept is aiming at. The idea is essentially to place a higher volume of smaller bets on the next play of whatever game you’re watching.
Terms and conditions apply to all offers. Please see Betr Sportsbook for details. 21+ Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER+
Signing up at Betr Sportsbook
To make an account at Betr, follow a link from this page to the Betr site. There, you’ll find a button that says “sign up” or “download the app.” This will prompt you for your email address. Then, you will be able to create an account through the Betr app. To create an account, you’ll need to verify your identity with the following information:
- First name
- Last name
- Social Security number
- Home address
- Email address
- A password
Once you’ve completed this process, you’ll be able to choose a payment method, make a deposit into your account and place your first real money bet at Betr.
Registration eligibility at Betr sports betting
It’s free to register at Betr, but there are still basic eligibility requirements that you’ll have to meet before you can create an account. First, you must be 21 or older, which Betr will verify.
You must also be located in a jurisdiction where Betr holds a legal license to operate. For the time being, that means Ohio. That doesn’t mean you have to permanently reside in Ohio, but you do need to be located within state lines to place bets at Betr. That means that if you are an Ohio resident but you travel outside the state temporarily, you won’t be able to place bets with Betr until you return. The Betr app will require you to have geolocation enabled to make sure this is the case.
It’s likely that as Betr grows, it will seek to expand into more states. Nonetheless, for now, Betr remains exclusive to Ohio.
Betr Sportsbook Massachusetts
Betr Massachusetts has been approved for a license in the Bay State and could launch as early as March 2023. We don’t know what the Betr Massachusetts welcome will be, but we can tell you what it was when the microbetting site launched in Ohio.
When Betr Ohio went live in January 2023, new users received $100 in bonus credits just for signing up. As this was Betr’s first launch that could have been a one-time special, but we’re guessing the online sportsbook will have something to off Massachusetts sports bettors when it launches.

Downloading the Betr Sportsbook app
So far, Betr has a license to operate online in Ohio. That means that it won’t have retail operations for the time being, and wagering at Betr will require that you download its app for Android or iOS.
To get it, follow a link from this page to the Betr website and click the button that reads “download the app.” From there, you’ll be redirected to either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, depending on your device, and you’ll be able to install the Betr Sports app.
Once the app has finished downloading, you’ll be able to open it and create your account. Once your account is set up, choose a deposit option and add money to your account. You’ll then be able to start placing micro-bets on the Betr platform.
Make sure that geolocation is enabled for the Betr sports betting app. Otherwise, it won’t be able to verify that you’re located in Ohio, and you won’t be able to place bets. Don’t try to spoof your location with a VPN, as your account could receive a ban if that happens.
Promotions
It’s likely that Betr will roll out more promotions in the future. That could mean odds boosts, deposit bonuses, insured bets or something else, but until it happens, we’ll have to wait and see.
You can also reasonably expect that Betr will offer promotions for specific major sporting events.
Payment options at Betr Sportsbook
We’ll have to wait to see what payment options Betr sports betting accepts. In all likelihood, some assortment of the standard options will likely be available, such as the following:
- ACH e-check
- Visa
- Mastercard
- Discover
- PayPal
- Play+ card
- PayNearMe
- Online wallets
Another unknown is whether bettors in Ohio will have an in-person option for depositing and withdrawing. Given Betr’s partnership with Hall of Fame Resort and Entertainment, which has secured a sports betting license, it’s possible that customers will be able to make deposits — and potentially place bets — at the Hall of Fame Resort in Canton. There is no confirmation for this yet, however.
Betting options
To understand what the betting options are at Betr Sportsbook, it’s important to understand exactly what micro-betting is. At most traditional sportsbooks, the main bets are moneylines, point spreads, totals and so on. When you make this type of bet, you’re wagering on the outcome of the game: who’s going to win, how many points will a team win or lose by, how many total points there will be in the game.
Since Betr is a micro-betting platform, the wagers will likely be different, similar to live betting at a standard sportsbook. Rather than bet on the outcome of the game, you’ll be betting on small events within the game. The idea is to make a series of fast-paced bets, which settle almost immediately after you place them. If you’re watching a game, for example, you’d be making a series of bets on what’s about to happen on the next play:
- Football: Wager on drives and plays. You might bet on whether you think the next play will be a running play or passing play, or the outcome of the next drive (touchdown, field goal, turnover). It gets even more granular than that: Will the next pass be completed or not? Predict the next player to catch a pass, score a touchdown, etc.
- Basketball: Wager on shots and possessions. What will the outcome of the next play be? You could bet on a two-pointer, three-pointer, free throw, missed field goal or a turnover. You could also bet on what the next score will be and which team will score it.
- Baseball: Wager on pitches and at-bats. Will the next pitch result in a ball, strike or the batter putting it in play? How about the next at-bat — will it be a single, double, triple, home run, walk or an out? Or wager on how fast you think the next pitch will be.
As you can see, micro-betting shifts the focus to the immediate, like an accelerated form of live betting. Sports like football and baseball have natural breaks for placing micro-bets.
Live betting
Fans of live betting may adjust very well to micro-betting platforms like Betr. Live betting tends to offer a quick turnaround between placing a bet and having the bet settle, along with the fact that live betting allows you to wager while you watch a game. Micro-betting is the fastest-paced form of that style of wagering.
Sports you can bet on at Betr Sportsbook
Betr has a relatively small number of sports available at the moment. In part, this is because only some sports are well-suited to micro-betting as a concept. Here are the current available leagues and sports for wagering:
However, it’s possible that we could see more sports in the future. If we were to speculate on future additions, here are some possibilities that could prove viable in a micro-betting context:
- NHL
- UFC
- Boxing
- Golf
- Tennis
There are certainly more sports that would also fit the bill, but for now, Betr’s offerings are limited to the five options in the first list.
Is Betr legal?
Yes, Betr is a legal and licensed online sportsbook. On Nov. 16, the Ohio Casino Control Commission approved Betr’s license to operate in the state of Ohio, and it launched on Jan. 1, 2023, in the state. Betr has since been licensed in Massachusetts, though a launch date has yet to be announced. Betr will seek equivalent licensing in other states as it looks to expand in the future.
Betr’s legal status is a benefit for bettors since it means that Betr is regulated and overseen by the appropriate government agencies. This means security standards for your personal data and payment information. This is not necessarily the case when it comes to unlicensed offshore sportsbooks, which are much riskier and may prove to be scams. Currently, Betr only holds a license to operate a real money sportsbook in Ohio, and you will need to be located within the state to place wagers there. If you are not in Ohio, you will be limited to the free-to-play version of Betr.
