Duke trying to right the ship

The Blue Devils limped into the tournament following consecutive losses to archrival UNC and a first-round ACC Tournament exit at the hands of NC State. Duke is not short on talent, though, with 7-footer Kyle Filipowski averaging 17.1 points and 8.2 rebounds to flash his potential as a professional prospect. Jeremy Roach can provide senior leadership in the backcourt for coach Jon Scheyer, while sophomore Tyrese Proctor and freshman Jared McCain are capable of getting hot.

Can Vermont make noise outside America East?

The Catamounts are in the tournament for a third straight year after clinching a fifth straight regular season title in the America East Conference. They’re a No. 13 seed for the fourth time since 2017 and lost their previous three first-round games by an average of seven points per game. Vermont’s defense is stronger than in years past, particularly in the backcourt, where juniors TJ Long and Shamir Bogues will try to slow down Duke’s guards.

How can Vermont slow down Filipowski?

While Vermont doesn’t start a traditional center, 6-foot-8 junior forward Ileri Ayo-Faleye might be able to frustrate Filipowski on defense. Filipowski has put up big numbers against sizable opponents but was held to 17 points on 6-for-13 field goal shooting in a loss to a smaller Wake Forest team. Vermont can also throw forwards Matt Veretto (6-8) and Nick Fiorillo (6-8) at Filipowski in this matchup.

Duke has depth in addition to top names

With plenty of top-tier prospects on their roster, the Blue Devils have more firepower than the Catamounts on paper. Vermont plays at a slower pace, so Duke might try to speed things up to create more possessions in a higher-scoring game. The Blue Devils averaged 43.1 points per game in the second half and ranked 15th in the nation in 3-point shooting (37.7%) this season. Scheyer’s squad has posted an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio (1.59), with four guards averaging at least 7.7 points and 1.8 assists per game.

Duke vs. Vermont injury report: Who’s out, who’s questionable

The Blue Devils lost freshman guard Caleb Foster to a foot injury in a loss at Wake Forest on Feb. 24, and it is unclear if he will be ready to return in the first round. Filipowski suffered a leg injury during the postgame celebration in a loss at UNC but played 34 minutes in the loss to NC State last Thursday.

Vermont lost senior forward Matt Veretto (shoulder) and sophomore guard TJ Hurley (foot) to injuries prior to the America East Conference Tournament. Hurley has returned to action, but Veretto is questionable after missing the Catamounts’ last five games.
