What bets are available for NFL preseason games?
The betting options for the preseason are limited when compared to the regular season. The main attractions are the big three bets: moneyline, spread, and over/under. Bettors who are looking for something more can explore the same bets for quarters or halves of the game, such as a first-half moneyline, second-quarter spread, or second-half over/under.
You can place simple parlay bets, such as a spread plus the total, or even combine bets from multiple games on a single slip, such as moneyline outcomes from four separate contests. Player props generally aren’t available during the preseason due to uncertainties over playing time. Once we get to NFL Week 1, the menu will have many more choices.
New NFL head coaches making their debut
The preseason presents the first chance for rookie players to see the field in real, live pro football action. It’s also the first opportunity for first-year head coaches to make their mark. Over the offseason, five teams switched things up on the sidelines.
- Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Gannon
- Carolina Panthers: Frank Reich
- Denver Broncos: Sean Payton
- Houston Texans: DeMeco Ryans
- Indianapolis Colts: Shane Steichen
Reich and Payton are experienced NFL head coaches, previously with the Colts and Saints, respectively. Gannon, Ryans, and Steichen are highly regarded former coordinators looking to turn around some struggling franchises.
Which NFL teams had the best preseason record last season?
As always, the past is no guarantee of future results. However, looking back to 2022, six clubs made it through the exhibition season unscathed:
The Ravens were the only member of that group to advance to the postseason. On the opposite end of the spectrum, six clubs went winless in the preseason last time around:
- Jacksonville Jaguars
- Los Angeles Chargers
- Minnesota Vikings
- Seattle Seahawks
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Washington Commanders
Five of the six members of this club made it to the playoffs a season ago, with the Commanders serving as the lone outlier. In short, preseason success — or lack thereof — is not necessarily an indicator of what’s to come when the games that matter get underway. However, the overall team approach to the preseason can make for an interesting research point when trying to make sense of what might happen during upcoming exhibition games.
