UFC 290 includes two title fights at the top of the card, as 145-pound champion Volkanovski takes on interim champ Rodriguez with the undisputed title on the line. UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno defends his belt against former foe Alexandre Pantoja.
Volkanovski is fresh off his unsuccessful bid to become a two-division champ in February and back home at featherweight for another fight in which he faces a significant height disadvantage. Volkanovski will be giving up about 5 inches to the taller Rodriguez, but that’s nothing new for the Australian champ. What Volkanovski excels at is making mid-fight adjustments that help him take over a bout in the later rounds. In the flyweight co-main event, Moreno faces a fighter who beat him in two previous bouts, most recently in 2018. Still, Moreno comes in as the slight favorite to retain his title, in large part because he’s improved his all-around game so much in the last five years. Pantoja is a dangerous underdog with a proven track record in this exact matchup, but he also lacks some of the big fight experience that Moreno has had in recent years.
